We were disappointed after reading such rave reviews. The property is tired and lacking atmosphere - it is a conference venue which has lost the ambience of his historic past and the inherent beauty of the building has not been maintained. Our duplex room was indeed very spacious, but the lighting is poorly designed, and the furniture uncomfortable and random, so the space is hard to use sensibly. The bathroom has old fittings and plain white tiles with a fluorescent light over the sink. Breakfast was fine but not as good as, say, a Valk hotel. Our room was in an annex which was not very castley - the courtyard looks like a 1990s: holiday park hotel. It could have been a lovely stay at a lower price with less inflated expectations.
Ambience not as lovely as we had expected. Price too high for what it is.

The hotel is located in lovely open countryside on the edge of Herkenbosch. Lots of trees, greenery and places to walk a dog or cycle if you are inclined.
We stayed in a split level room (11) in the annex. The bedroom was large and the bed was comfortable. There was air conditioning which was necessary as it was quite warm and humid duting our three night stay. The ensuite bathroon was also large and had a good shower. Annoyingly there were no hooks to hang wet towels after showering. There was a heated towel rain at the end of the bath but because of where it was it was slightly awkward to get to. Access to the bedroom was by quite steep stairs and in my opinion not suitable for someone with mobility issues.
Breakfast was very good. There was a good choice of fruit, breads, cheeses and cold meats. The warm food, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages was actually warm which is not always the case in some hotels.
We didn't eat in the restaurant at night as we ate with relatives staying closeby in Melick.
The downstairs sitting area of the room was quite dark and the lighting not optimal. We didn't draw the curtains at night for fear of pulling the curtain rails off the wall. Luckily we were not overlooked. The TV channels available were limited. If I'm honest I feel that, that part of the room could do with some updating, but again perhaps the owners consider it to be in keeping with the rest of the castle?

Nice staff and lovely location in nature
The rooms are dated. Heatings not working well and we waited over 1.5 hrs for dinner, so service a bit slow.
