This is a simple, 'Swiss chalet' style inn located right on the Kawayu Onsen river.
We were doing the Kumano Kodo and decided to skip a section by bus to maximise our time at the river so we could relax, warm our bodies, and enjoy the area rather than rushing through. We were glad we did – the river onsen is such a unique experience, building your own 'open air bath' and controlling the temperature to how it suits you. It was a very special spot.
The inn itself has two onsen washrooms, one overlooking the river, which we enjoyed relaxing in before getting ready for dinner.
The rooms and the inn itself is a little dated, but I think that is part of the charm! The beds were comfy and everything was clean. The staff were really lovely, too.
The included dinner was very generous serving of a beef patties made with a-grade Japanese beef – it was nice but my personal preference would be a more traditional Japanese style meal, if possible.

It’s in front of the river were you can take advantage of the thermal waters. It’s quite spacious with a great dining room. All very clean. The breakfast was good. The woman was very helpful with bus directions.
It needs a revamp, the doors are creaky and those bedcovers…, not sure if everyone fits in those tight toilets.
We were promised to get a reservation at a nearby restaurant but they did not do it. It was full and we had dinner in a very basic cafe, with great homemade plum wine though.

No en-suite facilities, but good onsen availability meant this didn’t matter.

Private onsen was amazing. Also breakfeast was very big and tasty. Hosts were very kind and welcoming.
