For one person the room was more than adequate. When I travel to a place that I have never been before I spend as little time as possible in my room: a nice bed, a functioning toilet, and a good shower is all I need. Hotel Kalken met all of my needs.
Going up the steps to go down the steps on the other side didn't make any sense specially with a suitcase. Whose idea/design was this?

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the location was great… Only a couple blocks from the main street in town, which is important because there are not Ubers available in the city so you will want to walk to dinner dinners and shops.
You will not get sleep. First of all be warned that if you go in the summer, it is daylight until almost midnight and the sun comes up around 4 AM… They do not have blackout curtains! It would be such an easy purchase for them, but they only have a very thin curtain that light gets through so the sun is hitting your eyes and it will be so hard to sleep. Also this is one of the loudest hotels I ever stayed in. You will hear every single sound in the hallway echoing so if you are a light sleeper like me, you are not going to get a new sleep there.
The bathroom facilities in the room were awful. The plumbing did not work… The sink pressure would start blasting and spraying the room out of nowhere, the toilet ran the entire time and broke multiple times, there were no counters in the bathroom, the heat and cooling in the room did not work and opening the window was dangerous because it was on the first floor leading to the street and there was no screen.
I don’t want to rate them poorly because the people are so nice, but I would not recommend this hotel.

Kind staffs. Good location to the town center. Quiet environment. Spacious room for the price.
The controller of the central heating was broken and we were not able to adjust the temperature of the room. I hope bottled water is provided in the room.

The staff was very friendly. I hope they will work more on hotel hygiene and food quality.
The room was not clean, vacuumed, and there was even hair in the bed. The hotel is quite old, but that's no reason not to clean it, the breakfast was very bad, the food is not fresh and very low quality.
