Gasthof Neuwirt in Klagenfurt is a really nice, super place to stay with a totally different vibe from a standard hotel. The owner, Josef, will be the first to tell you that it’s not a hotel—it’s a traditional Austrian Gasthof, and he takes huge pride in that. He’s lived in the area all his life, but he’s also travelled the world and worked in hotel management in places like Santa Monica and Los Angeles, which makes him a fantastic guy to talk to. Right after checking in, before we even dropped our bags, we sat out back in the lovely seating area, enjoyed a beer and a glass of wine, and chatted with Josef. You just don't get that personal engagement in other hotels. The room was modest and on the smaller side—dominated by the double bed—but it was newly renovated, very clean, and had everything we needed, including a TV and good storage. The real highlight for me was the bathroom shower. It had a powerful, warm, hot jet, which is always my true test for any place I stay. Breakfast is another area where the Gasthof really stands out. It isn't a generic buffet; it's a family affair served right at your table by Josef and his wife. They bring out yogurt, muesli, fresh warm baked breads, cheeses, hams, freshly squeezed orange juice, tea, coffee, and eggs cooked to order. That hospitable, personal touch made every morning special. Location-wise, it’s on the north side of Klagenfurt, making it extremely easy to access from the autobahn. The A and 4 buses stop literally 10 meters outside the door, and the train is right there too, taking you straight into the city center. It was great for exploring Klagenfurt—we took the bus in, walked around, and caught a fantastic music festival in the square while enjoying a quiet drink at a pub right beside the crowd.
