I've stayed at the Carnmore a few times and it's always solid, if unsurprising in either direction. This location is about 1km from the heart of downtown, but is close to enough fine restaurants (Rangoon Ruby, Himalayas, etc) that it makes for a reasonable choice if you don't need to be in the thick of it. Don't sleep on the $2 samosas at Bolina down the block either.
The Carnmore staff is friendly and the place is always clean. Wifi is fast enough, free and stable. Lots of natural light in the room and my bed was comfy. There's a restaurant on premises, Hoi Polloi, which I find average and pricey but acceptable if you can't be bothered to leave the building. Oh, and the Carnmore is also steps away from the best scotch shop in New Zealand, Whisky Galore.
I'd stay here again as a solo traveler.
The breakfast for $30 NZD is a pretty poor value. Coffee is good however.
My room initially had a sewer smell, but notified staff and they resolved it while I was out.
Laundry is available for a high fee, but I opted for nearby laundromats since there are no washers on premises.
No desk in my room but there was a long sort of bar by the TV which can hold a laptop.

Location was good and room was clean and tidy
Small room, but to be fair that was my fault when booking through booking.com as i always do, i overlooked that the room size was 22m. Too pricey for a very basic room. Photos certainly looked better than it was
