The Kunken is located down a steep single lane concrete track (just about accessible by 2-wheel drive cars) in a glorious location overlooking the Golfo Dulce, with a long sandy private beach and canoes/paddleboards available free.
It's a small "hotel" with 7 villas and a "house" all run by a day manager and two bar/waiting staff; all of whom were very hospitable during our stay. This isn't the Four Seasons, it's laid back and informal; sometimes quite so. Don't expect western-style, major hotel chain elements. The villas don't have aircon, just central fans but, as the official pictures show, the upper "walls" are in fact open but with fine wire mesh to keep the bugs out.
We had breakfast and dinner most nights as there's very little available in the vicinity & I don't recommend driving at night. Some of the menu is really good, some less so. The wine selection is pretty good.
The resident club foot coati, we named Cassidy, patrols the grounds and colourful birds frequent the fresh fruit left by the dining room.
There was a problem with the hot water supply, which got sorted on the second day (mañana).
Our villa and pool was the last one, adjacent to the jungle so was relatively private; however the side wall facing the adjacent villa had no curtains. Both bedrooms in the villa had half height curtains on the front elevation.
If you need complete darkness and quiet to sleep, you may struggle as the dawn chorus kicks in at 0530 and, being adjacent to the jungle, it was at Spinal Tap volume of 11. So, bring a good eye-mask and ear plugs if you want to sleep past 0500 everyday.
The bed in the main room was fine; however the single beds in the second room were very firm and would benefit from new mattresses.
There appears to be a slight disconnect between the cost and the quality and level of facilities in the villa. Having said that, we had a wonderful relaxing stay, which wasn't perfect but, if returning to the Osa, we would consider staying again.
The villa descriptions on Booking.com and the official (English) website are not very accurate.

Eine parkähnliche Anlage in geradezu paradiesischer Lage, direkt am Meer, eingebettet in den Urwald. Schmackhaftes Frühstück und Abendessen, sehr netter Service im Restaurantbereich.
Wir hätten uns gewünscht, dass die Insektengitter dicht wären. Das Abendessen war überteuert, und es gab in der Umgebung keine Alternative.

Le cadre, le calme.
Équipements quasi inexistants, peu entretenus, personnel sympathique mais sans aucune idée du service.
On vous dit que le petit déjeuner démarre à 6h, personne sur place avant 6:30, on vous demande au petit déjeuner si vous dînerez au restaurant le soir - sinon ils le ferment…
Au vu du prix, on s’attend à mieux!

Ich will mit der Bewertung nicht nur schroff gegen das Hotel vorgehen. Doch wir haben für den Preis mit Abstand zu viele negative Punkte erlebt. Wir erhofften die Geschäftsleitung oder der Verantwortliche Angestellte hätte offene Ohren für unser Anliegen. Dem war leider nicht so.
Aus diesem Grund möchten wir umso mehr der ganzen Welt mitteilen, dass dieses Hotel nicht für diejenige gedacht ist, welche ein nettes, kompetentes und vor allem gastfreundliches Costa Ricanischen Hotel suchen. Wir erhofften zwei Tage lang Luxus. Die Enttäuschung die uns diese Unterkunft brachte, wurde zum Glück von ganz vielen anderen Tollen Unterkünften, Menschen und Naturphänomen in diesem tollen Land weggemacht.
- Das Küchen- und Servicepersonal war keineswegs genug ausgebildet für diese Hotelklasse
--> Wir mussten mehrere Male nachfragen, bis wir beim Frühstück und Abendessen Wasser bekamen.
- Preis-Leistung ist von einem anderen Stern
--> Vorspeise kostet 15 Dollar (4 Löffel Tomatensuppe)
--> Hauptgang kostet 30 Dollar, es kann zwischen mehreren Speisen ausgewählt werden. Das Thunfischfilet wurde mit Soya-Honig Sosse beworben, es wurde jedoch der komplette Fisch mit einer fertigen Thai Sosse aus der Flasche übergossen.
--> Espresso kostet 5$ beim Frühstück, wobei die gleichen Kapseln wie auf den Zimmern verwendet werden. (Kam daher jeweils mit der Tasse zum Frühstück)
-Internet ist moderat, (reicht nicht zum streamen und definitv nicht für Foto Upload.)
-Ventialtor funktionierte nur auf einer Stufe.
