Porto Alegre is a small, very cozy and welcoming hotel. The rooms were perfectly clean, with thorough housekeeping every single day. The location is excellent: within a short walking distance, you can easily reach three beautiful beaches. Transport connections are a huge plus! There is a bus stop right by the hotel to get to Chania town. Also, you can catch the bus directly from here to the ferry terminal for Balos Lagoon or take a ride to the famous Elafonisi beach. If you rent a car, the hotel is a great starting point to drive up through the breathtaking Theriso gorge, visit the stunning Lake Kournas, or discover other quiet, hidden corners of Crete. The magnificent view from the rooftop terrace during breakfast is absolutely beautiful and makes up for everything!
The breakfast itself is quite ordinary and repetitive, like a standard buffet. We would have loved to see a better selection of meats and cheeses. Also, the interior of the hotel feels a bit dated and could use a little modernizing.

This hotel has potential. It offers a solid base necessities. Although the design is a bit old, it is charming in its own way. Facilities are kept in good condition. As we rented a car at the airport, it was a pleasant surprise to see they offer parking at the property. At all times there was a couple of spots available.
Room was spacious enough for our group. Bus stop for Chania city buses is right by the hotel.
Although they label themselves a beach hotel, there is no actual beach nearby.
Breakfast is abysmal. Do not spend your money on it if you can choose not to. I would much rather suggest Porto Kalamaki next door for your breakfast, or simply buy something from a store.
At the poolside, there is no service. If you want to get anything, you need to go inside to reception yourself and order your drinks. Moreover, they don't have any glassware there for drinks. Our room was on the first floor which meant our "balcony" or terrace was below street level facing the parking lot. It was completely unusable and uninviting. I would have preferred an actual balcony on upper floors.
Even though they have bus schedules at the reception, they don't sell advance tickets for buses which is a bummer. You need to walk all the way to a store near the next stop towards town to buy those unless you want to pay the higher price on bus.
