About this cottage rental

Just minutes from Hot Springs, NC, Red Gate Cottage offers a peaceful stay overlooking the French Broad River. Completed in 2020, the home was thoughtfully designed to take full advantage of its setting, with river views from nearly every main room, two screened porches, and a flagstone patio positioned for sunsets over the water and surrounding mountains.

Blending modern comfort with vintage character, the cottage features carefully collected antiques and family pieces throughout the home. Quiet spaces to gather, read, cook, or simply enjoy the view can be found both inside and out.

House Overview:

Entry

A stone garden path leads from the parking area to the front entrance on the opposite side of the home. Guests enjoy convenient self check-in with a keypad lock.

Kitchen

The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and gathering, with modern appliances, cookware, dishware, utensils, a dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, and slow cooker. Guests will also find a drip coffee maker, electric tea kettle, coffee, sugar, basic spices, dish supplies, and a propane grill for outdoor cooking.

Main-Level Bedroom & Bath

The downstairs bedroom features a queen bed, abundant natural light, and a private screened porch overlooking the river. The ensuite bathroom includes a soaking tub and custom walk-in shower.

Upstairs Queen Bedroom & Bath

The upstairs queen bedroom offers elevated views of the river and surrounding mountains along with a private ensuite bathroom featuring a custom walk-in shower.

Upstairs Loft Bedroom & Bath

The loft-style bedroom at the top of the stairs includes two twin beds, a desk overlooking the river, and a private ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Please note this room is partially open to the stairway and connected by a doorway to the upstairs queen bedroom. Portable privacy screens are available if desired.

Outdoor Spaces

The outdoor living areas were crafted using local stone and designed to make the most of the setting. Enjoy evenings around the firepit, morning coffee on one of the porches, or sunsets overlooking the river.

The driveway accommodates 2–3 vehicles. Please note there is a garden path and several short sets of steps between the parking area and the entrance.

For quieter moments, the cottage includes comfortable reading areas, games, puzzles, a small library, and a writing desk with river views.
Morning coffee on one of the porches often comes with views of local wildlife — bald eagles soaring above the river, great blue herons along the shoreline, and Canada geese moving downriver toward Tennessee.
While the setting feels peaceful and removed, modern conveniences are available throughout the home, including Roku TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling capability for cell phones, and a landline.

Explore the Area

The French Broad River offers opportunities for rafting, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and swimming, with several nearby access points including Murray Branch and Paint Rock.

The scenic Paint Rock corridor, located just downriver from the cottage, offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, biking, swimming, and fishing.

Red Gate Cottage is located about fifteen minutes from Hot Springs, where guests will find restaurants, a brewery, small grocery stores, outfitters, and the area’s well-known mineral springs.

The surrounding mountains offer extensive hiking opportunities on trails and Forest Service roads throughout Madison County. The Laurel River Trail is only a few miles away, and the Appalachian Trail passes directly through Hot Springs.

The historic town of Marshall, approximately forty minutes away, offers a growing arts and music scene along with several restaurants and shops. Guests arriving from Asheville may find it convenient to stop in Marshall for groceries, fuel, or other supplies before heading to the cottage.

Asheville’s well-known restaurant and brewery scene is also within reach for day trips, dining, shopping, and live music.

Additional recommendations for hiking, fishing, dining, and local activities are provided in a guest notebook at the cottage.

Red Gate Cottage is professionally managed by Hot Springs Getaway.

I have been using VRBO for about 10 years and this was by far one of the best experiences I’ve had. The property is beautiful. The drive seems intimidating but after a day you are used to it. Everything is conveniently close but takes longer if you are not used to Mountain roads. We definitely plan on coming back. The home is beautifully stocked and maintained and the host even presented us with a bottle of wine. Loved everything about it.

House is lovely. Parking was a problem and river road was VERY rough. Inconvenient and difficult unpack/ pack due to entrance being on far side of house from parking area.
