We stayed at Villa Mara in Kalami Beach with our family of nine including an 8-month-old and a 22-month-old. The villa itself is beautiful, with a stunning exterior, lovely grounds, and a very nice pool. The setting is gorgeous, and there is a lot to appreciate about the property.
The biggest problem was the air conditioning. It was around 95°F (35°C) outside, and for the first two nights we were unable to use the upstairs bedrooms because there was no working air conditioning. Family of five ended up sleeping on a couch, and with two very young children, I was extremely concerned about them overheating. We were told there had been a power failure the first night, and someone was sent out to try to fix the problem, but it was not resolved. Someone came again the following night, and thankfully the air conditioning was finally repaired. Given the circumstances and the fact that we could not properly use the bedrooms for two nights, we were disappointed that there was no compensation or adjustment to the cost of our stay.
Another thing we were surprised by was how little was provided at the villa. Guests are expected to purchase their own toilet paper, garbage bags, shampoo, soap, conditioner, and other basic necessities. For a villa at this price point, we expected at least some basic supplies to be included. There were also very limited items available for cooking, which made preparing meals more difficult than expected.
To their credit, the hosts did try to address the air-conditioning issue, and they also treated us to a very nice dinner at Thomas. The food there was excellent, and we appreciated the gesture.
Overall, Villa Mara is a beautiful property in a fantastic location, and the exterior, pool, and grounds are truly lovely. Unfortunately, the problems we experienced during the first two nights, especially the lack of air conditioning during extreme heat with two babies, made the stay much more stressful than it should have been. For the amount of money we spent, we expected a higher level of comfort, preparation, and basic amenities. But it is not a super host and I didn’t realise that there is a difference during my booking
