Appalling accommodation - avoid !
The cottage had a pleasant pub with a campsite nearby. We appreciated being able to get out. I contacted booking.com and they have given us just under £200 credits as compensation for our stay, but now I just wish we had gone home, after one night. On morning one I contacted the house owner detailing the issues, and she refused to accept them, telling me that "I did not understand the character of a property with lime plaster on the walls". The stay at the property was unpleasant and made my daughter unwell, but on the plus side, we all survived.
Avoid this house and owner! The property was damp. Two of the bedrooms to such a degree that the bedlinen in both was damp to the touch. The walls were wet to the touch and had wallpaper peeling off. The daily amount of water that the dehumidifier we rotated between the two rooms extracted, each daytime, took over a minute to pour down the sink. We asked for an additional dehumidifier for the other damp room, and the owner declined to provide one.
The property was dirty. All rooms other than the kitchen and bathrooms were dirty; dusty, cobwebbed, with paint and paper debris from the walls on the floor.
The property furnishings were tired and stained. Many surfaces were covered in several layers of stained throws and rugs, and soft furnishings, wallpaper and chair covers were peppered with stains, torn, scuffed, and were dirty.
The property was poorly maintained. Window handles did not work or were falling off. The garden was unkept with nettles and weeds, and the lawn had obviously not been cut for some time. Fixtures were replaced with unmatching replacements, and a hole in the ceiling of the downstairs bathroom was filled with a soft rabbit toy.
The property was constantly filled with flies. I photographed and filmed these for the owner to see, but she refuted them. We could not keep our food out throughout our stay, as the risk of infection from these was constant. Flies pervaded every room in the house and at times in each room we each counted 15-20. I was appalled to hear that the property owner has attempted to debit from my £400 holding deposit, following our stay. No mention of any damage was made to my mother or friend when they met the owner, as we checked out. I understand that they did have a long conversation at this time, during which the owner said that our complaints were all unfounded and stemmed from our own lack of understanding of what an old building is. Shameful response!
