Cottage on quiet farm close to town and wineries
About this bed and breakfast
Auburn Hill JEFFERSON cottage Circa 1802 offer a peaceful private setting on a historic horse farm once owned by Thomas Jefferson and part of the original Monticello estate, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. with close proximity to wineries (10 minutes), town (12 minutes), Monticello (next door neighbor), Rivanna River(borders the property) Carter mountain (8 minutes), Clifton Inn ( 2 minutes) and many other activities. The cottage dates back to 1805, the property was once part of Monticelo and owned by Thomas Jefferson. It has been completely updated and modernized, combining the best of both worlds. There is a private lake (catch and release fishing), along with a 14 foot dingy for those qualified to operate it! A "Jimmy Buffet Key West" 20 x 40 heated salt water pool complex including a PRIVATE HIIGH END JACUZZI FOR EACH COTTAGE unit, a large grill with side burner, two large bars, pavilion, indoor/outdoor showers, bathroom/changing room, multiple outdoor games, two fire pit, two double hammocks and mountain/pasture views with complete privacy to enjoy the area. Most times it will be only you at the pool area. It is a working farm so there will be help around the farm to keep it well groomed for visitors. Magical setting for watching wildlife like the bald eagles soaring down the river, multiple deer grazing in the fields, geese and ducks floating on the lake, or Great Blue Heron trying to catch lunch. Once on the farm you do not see any close neighbors (cottage is near main house, but situated to maximize privacy), unless you count looking up at the distant hillside to Monticello(see photo). The whistle or light rumbling of the distant train across the river can be heard on occasion. You can walk down to the rivers edge and sit on a large bolder watching the occasion kayakers floating down the river(or bring your own). James Monroe's home is only 10 minutes away, along with 14 wineries and 15 beer or cider breweries within 10 miles of the farm. There are hiking trails on the farm and adult tire swings for your use. Feel free to bring your bikes or kayaks with you. No one will bother them at the farm and you will make good use of them in the area. Additionally I own another farm with 1100 acres about 15 minutes from Auburn Hill farm with extensive roads, trials and a large 13 acre lake which guest can use if requested. I have owned a hotel and travel a lot, so tried to be thoughtful on the issues that bothered me when living out of a suitcase or backpack. Welcome feedback to correct any I missed or did not think of when remodeling the cottage for guests. Please contact me during your stay with any concerns or questions. There are boxes of artifacts (also many highlighted around the property) that I can make available if there is any interest in the farm or surrounding area history...,kick back and enjoy your stay.

This was our first trip without kids and it was a much needed magical oasis to unwind in.

We were welcomed on our arrival by the host, Steve. Throughout our stay he continued to be a welcomed presence, offering dining suggestions and good conversation.
This was a needed vacation and checked all of our boxes, privacy, fresh air, amazing pool and jacuzzis and a very sweet dog! We will be back:) Thank you Steve for the perfect escape.

The property was amazing. We took walks and never left the farm. There are deer and birds and flowering trees. It was beautiful and relaxing. The pond is stock with fish and they bite. The mattress was excellent and the bedding was new. There was coffee and wine waiting for us and plenty of bathroom supplies. Very comfy and convenient. The owner knows the area and he was very helpful.

We very much enjoyed our stay at The Jefferson cottage. We were in town to visit our son during UVA’s family weekend. It was a busy weekend, and we wish we had more time to enjoy everything the farm property had to offer. The view was wonderful and the cottage had everything we needed. Steve was very welcoming and accommodating.

Great location, great owner and just a perfect place to stay with easy access to C-ville, but in a quiet majestic setting.

The room we booked was changed the night before arrival, not offered a refund. The new room was not clean and not fully stocked with all things listed. The property/ farm manager did not respond to messages so we figured things out about the property as we went. Beautiful pool and pond. Disappointed in accommodations as well as having the room we booked changed considering there were other guests in that room when we arrived.

Stunning summer stay
This property made for an absolutely stunning summer stay. The pool space was like staying at a private resort. You cannot beat that. It was a gorgeous outdoor space. The cabin itself was quaint and charming, the decor was a bit dated, the towels were lush and sheets and bed were cozy. The internet did not work well but it wasn't an issue since we spent so much time outdoors! Not the most comfortable space for a long time indoors but we really enjoyed how gorgeous everything was outside. I wish we would have had access to a washer/dryer for our 6 days there since the listing did indicate a washer/dryer (I noticed in fine print long after the booking that this amenity is only available for those guests staying 7+ days??). Also, I didn't realize in the listing that the cottage is a duplex apartment. Fortunately, both pairs of other guests in the connecting apartment were also fantastic! It still would have been nice to have that listed more transparently. All in all, this was a wonderful stay and I have only the best memories from this vacation.

Gorgeous Property
Steven set us up with very clear instructions on how to get in, very easy. I must have missed in the listing where it said there were two VRBO’s on the property, as we were surprised to find another guest at the pool when we arrived. That being said, it really didn’t matter, despite the other guests being upstairs we couldn’t really hear them. The location relative to Charlottesville is amazing, we got basically everywhere in 15 minutes. Overall it was great and would stay again.

Overall, my wife and I were disappointed with our experience. I must admit, the property is beautiful. the pool is super clean and the jacuzzi was a real nice plus. Now for the negative. We booked this trip for our 40th anniversary, and we wanted privacy. According to the information given, we assumed we would have the cottage and the grounds, including the pool area, to ourselves. This turned out not to be the case. When we arrived at the cottage, we realized there was another couple staying in the cottage, in the room right above us. The first night, they occupied the pool and jacuzzi area until almost ten o clock. We could also hear them walking around above us. Not the privacy we were expecting. Also, the cottage we were staying in is very old. That might not have been a problem except for the fact that there was a musty smell and everything was very damp. Also, little bugs kept crawling into the cottage under the front door, and several times we found snails crawling on the kitchen cabinets. Lastly, the furniture and the mattress could use an bit of an upgrade. We did not get to meet Steve, but I did talk to him by phone. He was very courteous, but didn't seem to think that our privacy concerns were a big deal. Steve's foreman, Woody, was very friendly and helpful. I guess, overall, we would have had a better experience if the cottage had been a little more updated, and we would have gotten the privacy we expected.

The narrow winding roads to reach this charming cottage are well worth it. Well located for visits to Monticello and Montpelier. The timing of my visit limited how much of the property I was able to enjoy (pool wasn’t yet open for season), but it was hard to beat sitting at the bistro table right outside my door, drinking complimentary wine and enjoying the peace and amazing view

The cottage is cozy and comfortable and the grounds are lovely. It was a pleasure chatting with Steve and the most handsome golden retriever we've ever met, Casey. Three out of our four evenings we just loved sitting on Steve's beautiful patio enjoying the peace and wonderful view and watching the sun set. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing stay! Steve was super helpful every step of the way and even helped us find a good spot to practice fly-fishing at his lake. The property was amazingly beautiful. We enjoyed relaxing while drinking coffee outside in the morning and looking at the incredible view while laying in a hammock. The hot tub was the perfectly relaxing spot at the end of a very busy day. Thank you for everything! It was fantastic!

Great location and great accommodation!
We spent two great nights at this quaint nineteenth century cottage, located on a large horse farm. The interior had all the modern conveniences, but once outside you could tell you were staying in a building belonging to our early American History. Perfect place to launch visits to Monticello which is just down the road. Host is fantastic and shared some of the history and artifacts connected to the property. We highly recommend this lodging.

Our stay at this cottage was one of our favorite Vrbo trips. Steve’s farm is picturesque with gorgeous views and close to so many things to do in the area (Monticello, hiking, wineries). The cottage is very comfortable with everything we could have needed. The outdoor pool/patio space is the highlight! Steve was a wonderful host. My only complaint is I wish we could’ve stayed longer.

This cottage is set on an farm with incredible views of fields and mountains. It has a lovely pool and entertainment area. The furnishings are of high quality. The host was great and we enjoyed his restaurant recommendations and chatting with him about the history of the area. My husband enjoys Presidential History and this place was a perfect home base. It has one drawback-you need to pass through the very small bathroom to get from the bedroom to the living room (or go around outside).
