Hotel Bell Bird

The owner is extremely friendly and made a considerable effort to help me arrange activities for me and my daughter, namely horseback riding. He was enjoyable to talk to and cares about the cleanliness of the accommodations. I saw him dry-mopping the floors at least once and was available for assistance when I needed him. The shower has extremely hot water, which is nice in Monteverde, which can actually be a little chillly. The restaurant beneath the restaurant is also wonderful. I'm not one to always eat at adjoining restaurants. I like to explore more when I travel, but we ended up eating there a few times. The breakfast is included and was very good and the dinners were also really good. Big portions too. Oh, and they offer to-go boxes and there's a refrigerator in the main atrium upstairs (in the hotel) where you can keep your food for a snack later or the following day. That was really helpful. We took advantage of that throughout our stay.

Do not stay in room #8. It's the room with two bunk beds and a twin bed (5 total), near the front of the building. The worst thing about this room is that it shares and open-air vent directly into the shared bathroom, above the shower (it's an exterior bathroom, with a door into the public atrium, not the bedroom). It is NOT just a glass window, it's a slatted window providing direct air access between the bathroom and that bedroom. Every person in the bathroom -- strangers, guests in other rooms -- who goes in to piss, shit, take a shower, and jovially yell to their friends in their own bedroom, carries all that sound straight through the open air vent into room #8. You have to lie on your bed listening to that wonderful symphony. I have no idea why the building was designed that way. Unrelatedly, by being near the front of the building, this room is fully exposed to the late-night motorcycle drag-racing on the main street, which doesn't end until those folks get their fill for the night. Do not, under any circumstances, stay in room #8. Also, the owner, who was extremely friendly, was quite insistent that I pay for the room in cash. The Booking.com listing makes no mention of this requirement, for which I had to take time out of my schedule to find an ATM (the first ATM I tried in Santa Elena was broken, so I had to add additional time to go to a second ATM), an entire excursion that I had no other need for. If he wants to be paid in cash, fine, but the Booking.com listing should say that. The other accommodation I stayed at on this trip also demanded cash, but at least they state it on the listing so you know going in in advance. And then, when I dumped the cash in front of him, he didn't even have the necessary change. He dug around, failed, and then called his buddy to come bring him some cash to finish the transaction. So he wants cash but isn't ready for it. He's still very friendly though. That helped a lot.

Breakfast was nice and the restaurant had friendly staff. We were also close to the sunset viewing point.

The rooms are quite small and the bathroom was outdated with a broken shower head. We also missed some larger windows in our room. A tip for the owner: - It would be an easy upgrade to buy real duvets instead of 4 layers of different blankets - Replace the shower head - Place a kettle in the reception room

Location is good to access the park

The whole package is bad, room is very small, very noisy and loud, the restaurant in the bottom makes a lot of noise and if they cook you can smell like you’re in the kitchen. Also don’t try and eat there, it’s the worst service of the whole 7 days trip in CR. Shame because the owner was nice. The leaflets are outdated and prices from 2023, plus their discount is only if paid by cash, which is only a way to avoid taxes or card fees, so not really a discount.
