You will probably be staying here because you are visiting Jabal Shams. By all accounts, this place won't have you running for the hills, but it's quite bare bones and way overpriced for what it is. I'll start with the good because it's a sheltered room close to the Balcony Hike, which is likely the only reason to stay here.
For those wondering about the road, you can absolutely do it without 4x4. We did it just fine. You will be going slower than the 4x4 vehicles, but there is nothing that should stop you from taking a regular sedan on the road. It's 10 km of corrugated dirt road, followed by about 2 km of paved road where a bunch of hotel (including this one) are located, then another 2 km of unpaved road to the balcony hike. All doable by car.
As for the hotel, the rooms are sizeable and they are great to be able to come back and shower post hike. The room was also reasonably clean though our feet got quite dirty from walking around the room. The man overseeing it was also pleasant and seemed friendly when checking us in.
Now, there's a lot of things this place could do to improve so I'll just list them.
-Note it's cash only. We saw that from previous reviews and brought cash but otherwise, there is nowhere nearby to get cash.
-There is no wifi at all. Have data on your phone because it's what you'll rely on the entire time you're here.
-The bed is singlehandedly one of the most uncomfortable beds we have ever laid on. It is like sleeping on a wood pallet. It is so so hard that I'm surprised they even make them like this. The pillow is also the lightest and flimsiest thing I've ever seen. We did not sleep well here at all.
-The AC blew hot air. I have no idea why. We had to turn it off and not use it.
-There is no shampoo or body wash. Just one of those cheap little round soaps. The towels also smelled weird.
-The shared kitchen area is quite grim. Like something you'd expect in a developing world truck stop. We did not see a sink.
-Despite the flaws, the price for this place is double anywhere else we stayed the whole time we were in Oman. But the hotels here know that you're a captive market and charge accordingly.
All of this said, it's a shelter pre or post hike. You aren't going to die from staying here but just spend your night here and move on.
