The house itself is large and spacious, with five bedrooms, and overall it has a lot of potential. The location is excellent — very close to Lake Bohinj, shops and restaurants, and many hiking trails start directly from the area, which made it very convenient for us. The surroundings and the view are beautiful. There is a nice outdoor area with a gazebo, barbecue facilities and a large table, as well as a large dining table inside, which was perfect for our group of nine people. The house is also very well equipped in terms of appliances: washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, coffee machine, and a kitchen with pretty much all the utensils needed for cooking. We also appreciated the small welcome gift from the host: a jar of honey, a small bottle of olive oil and a soap. There were dishwasher tablets, hand soap, dishwashing liquid, a new sponge and a cleaning cloth as well, which was a nice touch.

Unfortunately, despite all these positives, there were several significant issues, especially considering that we paid around €3,750 for 6 nights. The biggest concern was the condition of the two basement bedrooms. Both had a strong, unpleasant damp smell, and in one of them there was visible black mould covering more than half of one wall. The flooring in that room also appeared to be affected by moisture. Because of the smell and dampness, we had to sleep with the window tilted open most of the time. This was by far the most serious problem with the property and, in our opinion, something that should be addressed before guests are accommodated in those rooms. Cleanliness was another major disappointment. The showers were not particularly clean, and neither were the bedrooms. There were many cobwebs, dust in several areas, and under the beds it looked as though the floors had not been properly vacuumed for a very long time. The white stair railing was visibly dirty and yellowed from grime. The fridge and freezer also had a considerable amount of ice build-up. Some of the furniture in the bedrooms is quite old and worn, with surfaces peeling off. In one bedroom, the blind was broken, meaning the room could not be properly darkened at night. Unfortunately, a streetlight shone directly towards the bed and pillow. The bed linen and towels did not feel freshly laundered. They did not necessarily seem used, but they had a stale, closed-up smell, as if they had been washed a long time before and stored for quite a while. We washed some of them ourselves during the stay and the difference in freshness was very noticeable. There was also only one bath towel per person plus one small hand/bathroom towel, which we found insufficient for a seven-day stay. The amount of toilet paper provided was also inadequate for a group of nine people: only eight rolls of very thin toilet paper. By the fourth day, we had already run out and had to buy more ourselves.

Mostnica cottage is a large 3 storey house within the village of Stara Fuzina, 20 mins walk to Lake Bohinj. We loved staying in an authentic village surrounded by rivers, great hikes and friendly locals. It has lots of indoor and outdoor space to relax in as well as a large laundry. There is a small supermarket just a few minutes walk away and a couple of good restaurants.

It would have been nice to have soap and shampoo in the bathrooms! And we also didn’t have enough toilet paper for our 4 day group stay so we had to buy more. Not great especially when you pay a lot of money to rent the house!
