Marine Hotel Ballycastle

We liked the sea view room, the food, the friendliness of staff and the location. Everything was enjoyable.

Great location on the beach - unfortunately our room overlooked the roundabout, but you could see the beach just about! The restaurant on site was ok, but the food at dinner was fairly average. The breakfast was very good though and all the staff we encountered were excellent.

Food at dinner was fairly bland and would have preferred a room facing onto the sea.

The location is wonderful! It sits right across from the water and very central in this lovely little town. This could be such a wonderful place with so many possibilities but they are certainly going through some kind of transition and really lack in the hospitality experience that makes places want to return or recommend to others. First off, when we arrived the receptionist informed us that she was new but didn’t really offer any information about where anything was or even how to get to the room, which was a little complex…maybe with her being new she didn’t know but you would think that it would be part of training a new employee. When having dinner in the restaurant, we ordered a wine off the list (a Pinot Noir) and at first brought us a Pinot Gris, although our waitress Naomi was new also, she didn’t know what the wine was and the gentleman that seated us (who was impeccably dressed) didn’t seem to know either and after about 20 min and asking Naomi several times that we’d like our wine, she said they were looking for it but she didn’t know where the gentleman was but she was sure he’d be there shortly. During this time, the girl at the bakery counter was having some difficulty with the door to the storing cabinet and after watching her and another gentlemen try to figure it out…we suggested that Jim (my sister’s husband) go try to help (he’s very handy) so he went over and helped them and explained how to get it back in line. I was surprised that although she thanked him, you would’ve thought they would’ve made a point to come over and maybe comp him a glass of wine or a discount on our dining check but again…I thought it was just showing that they were lacking in training their staff in the basics of hospitality. I know it sounds like I’m disparaging this lovely little place but it has so much potential and I would love to return to Ballycastle and return with some much needed improvements.
