The place is lovely. If there was anything that didn’t meet our expectations, it would be that we booked as breakfast included, with a breakfast hamper. This we received on day one but then had to pay to refill it on the other mornings.

We were welcomed to Bulrush Barn by a cosy, thoughtfully furnished and beautifully well-equipped space that instantly felt like a home away from home, full of countryside charm. Everything you might need is provided, well beyond basic groceries.
On the day of our arrival, we were welcomed with a hamper for breakfast: a large loaf of bread, a litre of milk, six eggs, cereals, plus the farm’s homemade jam and apple juice. You can top these up later by the honesty shelf, (this breakfast is only provided on the day of arrival).
There’s lots to see around the area, and we visited some - but we ended up spending a whole day on the farm. We went crabbing on the private shore (they provide wellies - you will need them), meet the hens, had a swim in a pool just for us (for added extra fee), did a barbecue in the garden, and then relaxed in the hot tub. Honestly, it was a perfect day.
We also really liked how eco-conscious the place is: they use their own water source, the pool is heated with solar panels, and there’s even a bucket on the shore to encourage people to pick up litter.
We also learned a lot about peacocks—I’d never seen one fly up into a tree before, and we discovered that my daughter’s squeal sounds just like a peacock’s!
Just something to keep in mind rather than a negative: the access road (and the road to Cargreen) is quite narrow, and if you go out for a walk, you’ll need to head uphill along a fairly steep and rather tight farm track, which might be a bit tricky with small children — but there are also some shorter, easier walking options nearby, all clearly explained in the very detailed information pack.
The information pack can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but it gives a very thorough overview of the farm and its history, and with most things managed online (such as booking the pool or paying at the honesty shelf), everything runs very smoothly — though we would have preferred a bit more personal contact, while others might really appreciate this approach.
