Romel was such a great host to us as soon as we arrived, organising the slow boat to Luang Prabang and food for the boat. The private room we stayed in was good value for money, and central. The rooftop bar also has a great view of the Mekong river and Chiang Khong.

Great location right on the Main Street in Houay Xai. Plenty of communal space, clean and comfortable for a short stay.
The man who works there is a real credit to the place! He’s welcoming from the moment you step into reception and speaks great english. There were multiple rooms empty during our stay and he let us pick which one we wanted. He gave us recommendations and offered to help with organising the slow boat but we’d already booked, you can tell he really wants to help. We also had a great conversation while he was working in the cafe next door.
The bar upstairs didn’t seem to be open while we were there which was a shame.
My booking confirmation had three separate 10% charges after the room price so the initial price was actually increased by 30% upon booking: one for VAT, one for city tax and one under a generic ‘tax’. I couldn’t find any information on an official city tax for this town and a random ‘tax’ charge separate to VAT feels off. If they want to charge extra for the room then that’s fine but doing it via hidden charges doesn’t sit right with me. I hope that the city tax is actually going to the town.

Super clean, right next to Gibbon Experience office, great food and bakery next door, awesome English Speaking staff who were so helpful in booming onward travel.
