This is a unique and very special house inside the spectacular 5000 tree palm forest of Vai near the far eastern tip of Crete. The compact inside area has fully equipped kitchen with a gas cooker and a double bed, so the house is ideal for a couple or a single person who wants to get away from it all (the nearest shop is in the village 7kms away). The huge garden area is beautiful with outdoor shower, there is also a small bathroom with sink and hand held shower and toilet. Katerina the cleaning lady left me delicious home made biscuits and Spiros the owner, a lovely generous man brought grapes, eggs and Raki. The house runs on solar power. This part of Crete is strictly protected (thank god!) and part of the Sitia Unesco global geopark. You won't find any tacky overpriced luxury hotels or mass tourism here, which has ruined other parts of the island. Vai beach itself is very busy in high season but there are other quieter beaches and coves just a short drive away which are stunning.

Cosa cantava Tina Turner? Paradise is here... e se dobbiamo dare un titolo a questa esperienza non ce n'è uno più azzeccato. Appena entrati Virginie, che ci ha consegnato le chiavi, ha detto: "ecco il vostro giardino", siamo riamasti a bocca aperta. Le palme sullo sfondo, il prato con gli alberelli, tutto ben curato sembrava il paradiso. L'ospitalità la si avverte subito dall'accoglienza di Virginie e dagli omaggi che si trovano arrivando.
La casetta lontana da tutto autosufficente senza rete elettrica ma il suo bel pannello solare che la rende autonoma, alimenta anche l'aria condizionata. Il letto soppalcato comodo e una stanza con la cucina ben fornita con tutto il necessario. Il bagno è esterno ma ben fatto e pulitissimo, così come la doccia dietro un paravento di canne alla fine non così scomoda come potrebbe sembrare, (nel caso c'è una doccia d'emergenza in bagno). La parte esterna è il pezzo forte dove si trascorre la maggior parte del tempo, ben ombreggiata e confortevole con una vista spettacolare sul palmeto (riserva naturale a cui i Cretesi tengono molto). Non dimenticate di assaggiare il Raki che viene offerto, simbolo di ospitalità di Creta e molto buono.

Remote location. Friendly host. Nice kitchen.
I didn't realize this place was off-grid and used battery power. At 11:00 pm the power went out. I use AC in the heat of summer, which is what I had here, but more importantly, I use a CPAP machine. I ended up leaving around 3:00 am because I simply couldn't sleep. I called the host later that day to say I had left. I paid for 3 nights, but was never refunded for the nights I didn't stay.
