Beautiful old colonial property, surrounded by nature
Tired in areas and inconsistent electricity. Also buggy in the evening so you can’t really use the TV area. Felt a bit pricey for the quality

Tout ! Absolument tout était parfait. Un endroit paradisiaque que l’on voudrait garder confidentiel. L’accueil personnalisé, l’endroit plongé dans un havre de paix, les chambres très joliments décorées, tout était parfait ! Merci à Sue pour sa gentillesse et sa disponibilité. J’étais enchantée de voir les petits singes jouer dans le jardin. J’espère revenir un jour.

We selected JH Villa based on TA reviews. Like others, we were keen for a restful beach experience having spent the best part of two weeks touring around wonderful Sri Lanka. I’ll start by saying that we enjoyed our stay at JH Villa. We were lucky as we were the only guests at the property and so had the full run of the facilities. The property is in lovely grounds, has a nice pool area, with nice wildlife - peacocks, monkeys, monitor lizards, birds…less so the mosquitos and flies (note the property adjoins a river). Each suite comprises a bedroom, bathroom, indoor lounge and out door sitting area - which is all nice and spacious, if a bit quirky.
The property is out of the way and there are no walking distance restaurants/shops. Other reviewers have mentioned ‘Sue’ as being always on hand and available with good advice. Sue was totally elusive during our stay. No matter.
Somewhat disappointing access to the beach area was not available during our stay - we were told ‘it is no longer available’. The internet didn’t initially work - no problem for us. More disappointingly the in-house ‘dining options’ aren’t quite as advertised. Yes there is a chef (Sami) who appears to be available most times of the day. On our first night we asked him what was available to which he replied ‘I have everything in the freezer’. We had a very poor quality dinner which for Sri Lanka was extremely expensive (over double what we paid at delightful restaurants in Galle!). Similarly breakfast was good on quantity but less good in terms of quality! Even the fresh fruit was not the standard we had enjoyed everywhere else in Sri Lanka - the country of fresh fruit! I am sure that Sami is a talented chef but if he only has low grade ingredients it will never be a delicious experience. And given the distance to anywhere, this was a great shame. And it would have been nice to include a few snacks beyond tea/coffee in the room given the property remoteness.
