Everything. Joyce and her team were amazing. The rooms were incredible. We had just arrived after about 24 hours of travel - all 7 of us in our family. What a fantastic place to manage jet lag. Joyce and team were so accommodating especially to my veto picky eater (14 year old son). Loved it so much and couldn’t recommend it more. We went to the snow monkey park which was an incredible experience and a short walk from the villas. On our last day the monkeys were right outside our villas to say goodbye. The food was fantastic- so much to eat! The onsen was so perfect! Love, love, love!!

Breakfast and dinner was very good with attentive staff none least because being there are only two Villas so very few people staying. They employ very good chefs making for an excellent dining experience. The Villas upstairs lounge was very spacious and comfortable plus the terrace had a fabulous outlook. The natural hot springs open-air Onsen was very good.

Hotarutei was up until a few years ago only a restaurant and by building two villas on the properties grounds they now offer accommodation, but it's clear they are still going through a steep learning curve. The Villa we stayed in, Villa B, is a very spacious 2 bedroom one with plenty of space. However, there are issues such as the bedrooms do not have black out blinds so far from ideal for light sleepers. The fact I had to point this out to the staff and manager did surprise me and I do hope without delay they address the problem. Also not enough consideration to bedside tables, and draws for clothes. On our second evening we heard a large bang and the Villa shook. We thought it was from an earthquake but according to the manage it was likely something to do with the villas pump. There were also other issues that can easily be addressed such as providing clear instructions for non Japanese guests on how to use Aircon remote and other controls.

An absolute gem just a few steps from the snow monkey park. Beautiful villa , delicious gourmet dinner and the most caring and lovely staff to look after you. Couldn’t t recommend more!
