Magic Hills is a spectacular place for photos, but it also feels like part of an Instagram theme park

When we arrived at Magic Hills, we were honestly blown away. The villa is incredibly beautiful, every detail seems carefully thought through, and everything is amazingly photogenic. Almost everywhere you look, there is another perfect setting for an Instagram picture.

After four nights, however, our impression had changed. We increasingly felt that we were staying in a beautifully staged setting rather than in a place designed to actually live and relax in. Apart from the bed, we hardly found anywhere that really invited us to sit, lounge and spend time comfortably. At some point we even discovered artificial roses in the wardrobe and honestly wondered what they were doing there – probably waiting for the next perfect photo. The staff we met in person were consistently friendly, attentive and helpful. The guys who brought the food to our villa were especially lovely. What we found a bit “too much”, however, was the constant service contact via WhatsApp. There were so many messages, questions and offers. It also gave us the impression that the communication was not only about helping guests, but often about encouraging additional purchases and selling more services. We also found the pricing difficult to understand for Bali. A walk of just over an hour through the rice fields directly surrounding the property cost 300,000 IDR per person, plus 10% tax and an 11% service charge. For four people, this came to more than 1.4 million IDR – over €70 for a short walk through the local rice fields. We booked our rafting trip directly with the operator instead and paid less than half the price. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment for us was the restaurant. Being able to eat directly in your villa with that wonderful view should be one of the highlights of staying here. The menu is predominantly Western, and the food is nicely presented, but for us much of it lacked flavour and some portions were surprisingly small. Even simple things became unnecessarily complicated. We had a lengthy WhatsApp discussion about the size of the teapots. One day it was possible to get a larger pot, while the next day we were told that for two people only small teapots were available.

Fabulous way to start our holiday and throughly enjoyed this little piece of magic.

This villa was incredible. So private. Loved the private pool, bath and outdoor shower.
