Think Twice Before Booking
After a 116km cycle ride I arrived at the site and it appeared abandoned.
There was no sign with Kanarbiku Camp on it or directions to the entrance. There is a 2.5 metre high metal fence around the site similar to those you see on building sites. There was a wooden bar across the front of the toilets so the doors couldn't be opened. There were only two accommodation huts whereas the photos on booking.com shows four. (Please see my attached photos).
No one was around so I phoned the contact number but there was no answer. I sent a message on booking.com, I emailed and I phoned a second time but there was no answer.
I didn't know how long I would have had to wait for a response or whether I would get one so I began to look for alternative accommodation as I would probably have a long cycle ride to get there. I found alternative accommodation, booked it and left.
I received a SMS from the owner 21 minutes after my first phone call saying where the keys were. I don't know why he didn't phone me back or send the key details earlier in the day if it is self check-in.
Later the owner said that it is clearly laid down that people booking have to give an estimated arrival time and that the site is not manned. I have re-chechecked the booking.com listing and nowhere does it state this. Other accommodation providers send you a message after you have booked giving you further details and asking for additional information if it is required.
I have booked approx 150+ different accommodation on booking.com over the last two years, many of them self check-in whilst touring by bike throughout Europe.
Apart from one other, all accommodation owners have been very professional in providing key safe codes, key locations etc and requesting further information if they require it.
Overall a wholly unsatisfactory and very dissapointing experience with Kanarbiku Camp.
