Held hostage over toilet paper. And That Was Just the Beginning

The location is good. The accommodation itself would not be bad if it weren’t for the numerous issues that wasted so much of our time. Unfortunately, any positive aspects of the property were completely overshadowed by poor management.

We felt mocked and treated with complete disregard by the management, yet we never managed to meet anyone who appeared to be actually responsible. Just two hours before our flight, we were informed that the accommodation we had booked had been changed. When we arrived at around 8 p.m., we were met only by a security guard who was unable to provide any real assistance. Meanwhile, a member of the management team communicated with us exclusively via WhatsApp. He did not even introduce himself until we explicitly asked for his name, but immediately began demanding payment before we had had any opportunity to inspect the property. He converted the price of USD 114 into Tanzanian shillings using an arbitrary exchange rate that did not correspond to any official rate. We pointed this out, but he continued to insist on that amount. As it was already almost 9 p.m., we urgently needed to use the bathroom, yet he refused via WhatsApp to provide toilet paper until the payment had been completed. During this extremely unpleasant exchange, the electricity went off. As all the neighbouring properties still had power, we suspected a problem with the property’s electrical system. We therefore paid quickly after being assured that everything would be resolved, but it was not. We then spent around two hours waiting while the security guard, who was unable even to identify the problem, attempted to deal with it. It eventually became clear that the electrical system had failed, possibly because of a short circuit, and only then were we offered another property. By that point, we had missed an important work dinner. We then lost even more time because the staff could not find the air-conditioning remotes. The replacement property had no hot water for two days. Initially, we were told that the heater simply needed time, but the following day we discovered that the pump was not working.

Great location, comfortable spacious living, great value for money.

Great location near shops cafes and beach clubs. Quiet and secure neighborhood. Large house with all amenities needed. Only 10 mins on Boda or car into downtown. Host was very helpful and available.
