Our hosts were a delightful couple who worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. They picked us up from the train station and also on the day we went hiking showed us where to go, provided maps, dropped us off at the trail head and picked us up at the end. One evening when we had not bought food for dinner beforehand she cooked us a fabulous dinner. The countryside is gorgeous.
Not that we didn’t like this, but visitors should be aware that this area is for skiers in the winter and hikers during other times. After the ski season visitors drop off and many hotels close so there is not much in the way of eating options. We bought food in town to have for dinner most nights. There is a bus that services the area with the town of Iiyama. Pay attention to the bus schedule.

The hosts were great. Very kind and helpful. Drove us up to the slopes and picked us up every day. Breakfasts were really nice and the few times we had dinner there it was excellent. It's a simple Japanese pension so if you keep your expectations in line with that you will be happy
Shared bathroom was somewhat limited for the size of the place but not really a problem. Maybe could have done with a bigger common area but I'm nit-picking. What's key is the hosts and they exhibited typical Japanese kindness
