The flat is lovely, clean, and well maintained. The choice of linen was nice, and extra Kazakh-style futon mats were available, providing additional sleeping space alongside the large double bed and sofa. The location was also good. I have nothing negative to say about the flat itself.
I contacted the host in the morning to ask whether we could check in early or leave our luggage, as I was travelling with children. She said she could not accommodate this, so we stayed in a café until the 2:00 p.m. check-in time.
I had $ and £ and asked whether I could pay in either currency. She said no and told me to leave “now” to exchange the money. I asked whether I could rest for at least an hour before going out, as I had only just arrived at the flat. She said she needed to consult her husband. After several phone calls, she agreed. Before leaving, she told me, “Don’t make noise or the neighbours will complain,” “Don’t touch any of the walls,” and “Don’t break any of the walls.”
I rushed out to exchange the money, returned to the flat at around 7:00 p.m., and contacted her to let her know. She said she would collect the money at check-out. She then informed me that check-out was at 12:00 noon.
At 2:00 a.m., I left the payment, some extra money, and the key inside the microwave. I took a photograph and sent it to the host, explaining that we were leaving and that everything was inside.
She replied with messages including: “Wait, my husband is coming in 10 minutes,” “Why didn’t you tell me your check-out time earlier?” and “Don’t you know that you should send a video of the flat before leaving?”, “Who is going to pay for any damage you might have caused?” and “Don’t leave the flat unlocked!”
She later messaged to apologise and said that the flat was fine.
As I do not have the energy to deal with such a stressed and anxious host while travelling, I would not stay here again.
The whole experience felt excessive and unnecessarily stressful. Instead of spending my limited time exploring the history of Taraz, I found myself overthinking the host’s comments and worrying about the flat.
