Madeira is a truly beautiful island, and Casa Valhalla turned out to be a very pleasant base for exploring it. I spent my days hiking through some of the island’s most spectacular landscapes and my afternoons and evenings discovering Funchal, and it was always nice to come back to a quiet and relaxed place.
The staff were excellent. They were genuinely friendly, helpful and exceptionally responsive — whenever I sent a message, I received a quick and helpful reply. Communication throughout my stay was simply excellent.
I especially appreciated the warm and uncomplicated atmosphere of the house. Everything was straightforward and well organised, and I felt very welcome throughout my stay. Casa Valhalla was a good part of my Madeira experience, and I would happily stay there again.
The main thing I missed was air conditioning. Madeira can be very humid, and during my stay the weather remained humid throughout. After hiking or walking around the island, I often returned to the house feeling quite wet from the humidity, and an air-conditioning system or an effective dehumidifier would have made the room considerably more comfortable. This was probably the only significant comfort-related issue I noticed during my stay, as the house itself was otherwise very pleasant and well suited for exploring the island.
The approach to the house is also very steep, particularly along Calçada da Encarnação and Rua de Santa Luzia. This is not really a criticism of the location, but it is definitely something worth knowing in advance, especially if you are arriving with heavy luggage. The steep streets are part of the character of the area, but they can be demanding on foot, particularly after a long day of hiking or sightseeing. A rental car or taxi can be a practical alternative, especially when carrying bags or arriving for the first time.

There is no light directly after the first door up the stairs so kind of hard to lock it in the dark. But at our own apartment door and everywhere else there was more than enough

Beautiful apartment, clean and with a beautiful view over the ocean and the city from a high ground.
Self-check-in is smooth and instructions very clear.
Beds are comfortable, shower is nice.
There's a massive smartTV but we didn't use it.
I would certainly come back.
There's a big uphill walk separating you from the city centre and the apartment. Manageable on foot with some drop of sweat, or with Uber for 5€.
Lots of free parking spot (that's good), but instead of parking randomly like the locals I decided to look for a designed spot. Turns out the white-marked spots are reserved for I don't know what: I got 60€ fee.
So park randomly like everyone else, in the middle of the road or wherever you find a spot in front of someone's door.
