Kai Zanzibar Hotel and Spa

The staff was all so kind and helpful, a special shoutout to Veronica for being so hospitable! The cleaning team are fantastic and make sure your room is spotless everytime they come in. They always go the extra mile with decoration every time! The views are absolutely gorgeous as well and we had an amazing stay, no faults at all.

Beautiful property, made to live on Instagram. The location is great — right near the beach and a super nice sunset spot, but also an easy trip to Kendwa from there. The pool is beautiful, and the room is spacious with lovely design touches. Every room gets its own little porch and bean bag. There's also a coffee machine in the room, a nice plus since it's not standard in Zanzibar. Breakfast is a set menu, but the food quality is great. The one thing that could elevate the pool area is a bit of music — it would make it feel more lively.

There are monkeys that can wander into the gym (there is a zoo nearby!) — one of them tried to steal my husband's glasses and AirPods while he was working out. Luckily, thanks to the Maasai staff, everything was fine in the end, but it's something the property should look into.

Kai Zanzibar was a little bit of an oasis in Nungwi. The hotel is tucked in a quiet side street, and there are only a few rooms so it is very tranquil. It also has a true familiar feeling, and you feel after a couple of days that you know all the staff (and they know you!). Mostly couples were here when we were in, and there was always plenty of space in the swimming pool and common areas. There is a beautiful beach within a 5-10 minute walk, which also caters to mostly families and couples. The hotel room is incredibly beautiful and stylish, and every detail is thought of. The staff is kind and extremely helpful, a special note to Veronica in reception.

The walk to the beach is dark at night, so one needs to be careful coming back after sunset from the beachside restaurants, especially if alone. The hotel restaurant is overpriced and unfortunately does not serve alcohol. If you are travelling with friends or solo or are looking for a more lively time, this is not be the best place - most restaurants, bars and beach clubs are at least a 15- or 20-min walk away. We also tried to organise a tour through the hotel and it was a quite messy affair: on the planned day a taxi showed up to take us to Mnemba Island. About 30 minutes in the ride, we were told the taxi was not actually for us and that we were in the wrong car. We were brought back to the hotel with no explanations or another car and told the trip was cancelled because of weather conditions (which was not true). We complained obviously and the hotel manager did offer us a sunset cruise for free to compensate for their mistake.
