Staying at Casa do Rochio felt like stepping into a very warm childhood memory.
I chose this place because I wanted to experience a little bit of real rural Portugal: somewhere peaceful and surrounded by nature, but still within driving distance of Aveiro, Costa Nova and Buçaco Forest. It turned out to be exactly what I had hoped for, and somehow much more.
From the moment we arrived, there was this wonderful feeling of peace. The house is surrounded by a garden, hills and beautiful countryside, with the village quietly sitting around you. It reminded me of arriving at my grandmother’s house for the summer holidays as a child: that feeling that everything is good, you are safe, there is nowhere you need to rush to, and the whole summer is still ahead of you.
One of my favourite things was the terrace. We would sit there in the morning with coffee, looking out over the hills, and in the evening with a glass of wine, listening to the quiet sounds of village life. Sometimes we could faintly hear Manuela’s family watching television nearby, and strangely, even that added to the feeling of being somewhere wonderfully homely. At night a fox would come to visit, there were dogs keeping an eye on their little kingdom, and a cat who, in true cat fashion, seemed to have his own business to attend to. It all felt wonderfully authentic and alive.
The house itself was exceptionally clean. Truly, spotlessly clean. The beds and mattresses were incredibly comfortable, there was plenty of storage, a very good bathroom with two sinks and a shower, and everything we could possibly need in the kitchen, including a coffee machine. There is also a separate laundry room downstairs that guests can use. Everything felt cared for and thoughtfully prepared.
Manuela and Caterina were incredibly warm and welcoming and were always ready to help us. Manuela even brought us tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers from her garden.
