Findik Palas Otel was a great find for me! While it is an older property, I thought the gentleman at the front desk was friendly and welcoming and I thought the place had quite a bit of character, with paintings hung along the stairwell and a pleasant entrance. My room actually had a view over Küçük Pazar Cd., a bustling street with restaurants and shops which became quiet at about 11:00 pm. The room was quiet, clean, and with a bathroom attached. The Haliç metro station is very convenient as is the Küçükpazar tramway stop. You have multiple options for public transportation around here. There are many sights to see in this part of Istanbul.
The area around Galata Bridge seemed a bit sketchy at night. In the daytime, I did not have any problems there but there seemed to be a lot of hustle and bustle at night and, well, I would just ask one to keep his or her eyes open.

Unkomplizierter Empfang (obwohl der Rezeptionist kein Englisch spricht), kleines Zimmer mit sehr kleinem Bad, bequemes Bett, Kühlschrank im Zimmer, alles einwandfrei sauber; typisch unordentliche Umgebung, aber relativ ruhig und ich fühle mich generell sicher in Istanbul.
Ich musste selber WC-Papier kaufen, aber zum Glück gibts einen Supermarkt und lang geöffnete Kioske in der Nachbarschaft.
