Named after the notorious “owlers”, the wool smugglers who once worked these marshes, Owlers Cottage is an escape rather more comfortable than anything they would have known. The beach is 0.3 miles from the front door, and we have timed it. Inside, this two-bedroom retreat blends modern comforts with a nod to the area's smuggling past.

Sip your morning espresso out on the sunny decked garden, let the sea air wake you up, and plan the day: kite-surfing on Camber Sands, Rye's cobbled streets, or a book by the fire.

Owlers Cottage is open-plan, easy living. Whether you're cooking in the well-equipped kitchen, watching the 40” Sky Glass TV, or sitting out on the patio with a cold glass of something, it is set up for comfort.

Master bedroom: a king-size bed with a smart TV, Sky Stream and Netflix. Ask Alexa for a wake-up call if you want to catch the sunrise.

Second bedroom: two single beds, good for children, friends, or anyone who likes a lie-in.

Bathrooms: a family bathroom upstairs with a shower over the bath, plus a downstairs WC so nobody has to queue.

The fully enclosed garden is a proper suntrap, whether you're having your morning coffee, firing up the BBQ, or just listening to the waves and the marshland birds.
