Refugio de Montaña is a small family-owned B&B located off the main road on the way to Metztitlán. The hillside property has a single guest room with two double beds. The room is spacious, bright, and clean, though somewhat rustic. The beds are comfortable, and amenities include a TV, desk, coffee maker, hot water boiler, Nespresso-style machine, refrigerator, and outdoor terrace. Storage space for personal belongings is limited.
The room is not air-conditioned, but the fan worked well. It still got warm in the afternoon during our May visit, though the nights were cool and comfortable for sleeping. The Starlink Wi-Fi was excellent.
The bathroom is small, with a shower tucked into a curtained corner. The water was plenty hot, but the showerhead needs replacement, as the spray was weak and uneven. The towels were large and plush, but there was nowhere to hang them after use.
The terraced property includes some impressive agaves, cacti, and flowering plants, although some of the garden beds are overgrown. There is some traffic noise from the nearby road, but it was not a problem at night.
Communication before our arrival was excellent. Nacho helped arrange the details of our stay and speaks excellent English. During our visit, Oscar was an outstanding host—friendly, accommodating, and eager to share his region. He helped us with transportation, meals, and exploring the area.
Breakfast is available for an additional 200 pesos per person and was both generous and delicious.
Overall, Refugio de Montaña is a pleasant and convenient base for exploring the Metztitlán region. It is rustic and not for travelers who need everything polished and modern, but it is well suited for those interested in the area's unique landscapes and cactus species.
More storage space for personal belongings. Shower needs new shower head. If you are staying in a hot month note that the room has a fan only, no AC.
