Took my money and on the night of the stay told to go somewhere else by Booking.com
Absolutely disgraceful. I’d arranged accommodation to cover a house move from the south of England to County Durham—three nights in total. I was staying in a hotel for most of it, but as it was fully booked for the Saturday night, I reserved Watson House just for that one night as there appeared to be a shortage of accommodation in the area, and paid in full in advance to secure the booking as requested.
I emailed the owner twice in the week before the stay to ask how I’d access the property—whether via a key safe or if someone would meet me—but got no response. I had to assume I’d just be met there at the time I’d requested.
Then, barely an hour before check-in, I got a call from Booking.com telling me the house supposedly had a three or four-night minimum stay policy —something that was not shown on the Watson House listing when I booked (even the operator from Booking.com confirmed this). They offered me an alternative about 4-5 five miles away and sent a link, but I couldn’t open it due to almost no internet signal in the area (Vodafone). I couldn’t call them back either—the number showed as Hong Kong and my phone wouldn’t connect.
I strongly suspect the owners were offered a longer booking and I was simply pushed aside to make room. If this is what happened it's appalling to treat a guest this way—especially someone who’d booked in good faith and paid in advance. I ended up sleeping on an uncomfortable child’s inflatable mattress in an empty house on my first night in a new area.
Incidentally, I will never use Booking.com again. They should have stood by my booking and told the owners of Watson House to honour it—then update their profile afterwards to reflect any new minimum stay policy. Instead, they left me stranded at the last minute in the middle of moving house. An absolute shambles from start to finish.
