The property is in a beautiful, peaceful location with lovely views. It was very quiet, which made the setting feel relaxing. It suits families mainly looking for a scenic and secluded place to stay.
The accommodation itself felt quite dated, particularly the furniture and overall interior. There was also a noticeable smell when we first entered, and we ended up buying our own air freshener.
We also found empty bottles of laundry detergent and room air freshener left in the property. We were not expecting these items to be provided, so that was not the issue; it was more that leaving empty bottles there gave a strange and poorly prepared impression. It would have been better if they had simply been removed before our arrival.
Although we understood it was self-catered and were not expecting hotel-style service, we felt there could have been more attention to detail and maintenance. We were provided with only one main bath towel each for a three-night stay, with no spare main towels that we could find. Although ironing facilities were listed, we could not find an iron, and the toaster was only partially working, with just one side functioning.
Overall, the location is the strongest feature, but we personally would not recommend it for a couple’s getaway unless you are comfortable with a more dated property and are mainly choosing it for the peace, views and location.

When deciding to stay at the Roost, you really need to know what type of stay you want. If you want one with proximity to cafes, shops etc, you'll be very disappointed. But if you want seclusion, serenity and a stunning view, the Roost is top tier. It's an older cottage and needs a little updating but it is very comfortable, pet friendly (for a small dog at least), and view is absolutely spectacular. I stood out in the backyard one evening and watched lightning dance across the sky as a storm erupted over the water. It was breathtaking. You also don't get any mobile service, so no pesky phone scammers. And the gas fireplace is absolutely divine. The couch and rocking recliner's were very comfortable, the amenities were fine if dated. Really like that they have fans in the bedrooms.
As I said, it's a little older and needs some updating. Because we stayed in winter, during 4 days of torrential rain, we got wet and muddy a lot on hikes, so needed to wash and dry clothes regularly. We found the older top-loading washing machine was poor. Took 3-4 washes to just get our clothes clean, and then there was no way to dry them easily, other than draping them over the rickety clothes horse in front of the heater. Updating to a newer front loader and heat pump dryer (more energy efficient) would be fantastic. The TV could be a little larger and newer, but we did appreciate streaming services being connected on the Amazon Prime. The second bedroom could also do with some bedside tables. But these are all minor things. The Roost was great.

Location was great, quiet and peaceful. Beautiful views.
Property was poorly maintained, cobwebs everywhere, plugged bath dispensing mucous out of spa jets, uncontrolled wasp issue further exacerbated by poor cobweb maintenance outdoors, no outdoor seating or lighting in the evening and no dishwasher or even dish gloves.
