This was my first experience with a japanese hostel and it was a very good stay. I arrived earlier than anticipated, but that was no problem. I was allowed to check in an hour ahead of time. The employee at the front desk was very nice and accomodating. I had a feeling he enjoyed speaking a little japanese with someone, even tho mine is a little broken.
The dormitory was quite cold, but that was not an issue in the beds, as they provided a warm and cozy place to sleep. Everything seemed very modern. The showers were especially surprising. I was worried from experiences in other countries, but the showers were super modern and very clean. Same for the toilets and sinks. The lockers are spacious enough to even store larger items in them. And the location is great, almost right next to the exit of the Shijo Subway Station and not far away from several bus stops to get around Kyoto.
The AC was very cold. Walking under them was very uncomfortable and depending on where your bed is, you'll have to pass a few. This was not an issue for sleeping tho, as the beds were nice and cozy. It was just an issue when passing through.

Common space not very well clean. There are some appliances (microwave, water bolier) but absolutely lack of basic accessories like paper cups or paper plates. When I went to have breakfast I asked the staff to provide some more because there were no available, but they were not able to provide. Some other basic accessories lile slippers have to be paid. I do understand that stuff like soap, toothbrush, pijama can only be obtained by paying, but very basic like slippers and at least one little towel usually are the default you can get in similar hostels. Not very satisfied.
