Empire Cafe & Accommodation

Well worth staying. Affordable - clean - well laid out unit. Fabulous shower 😀 Comfortable bed. Lovely big deck with ramp for those with mobility issues ( well thought out,) Peaceful...with trees...woke up to bellbirds Secure lock up for bikes Private with ample car parking Children's playground across the road Accomodation attached to cafe which had a good selection of foods including all day breakfast...we had the waitbait ... 😋 Staff very friendly..Thanks Aroha 💜 Bonus is accomodation is between Hokitika and Greymouth...Kumara is a quaint wee community lovely to stroll around ..nice to return to after a day out We would definitely stay again

The stand out feature of my stay was the Empire cafe with their wonderful staff and excellenty food!. The motel room and bathroom are satisfactory but featureless. The shower has excellent pressure and the bed is comfortable. If you are looking for the basics this accomodation is adequate. Kumara is a magic location.

There are no windows no pictures or decorations- the atmosphere is quite sterile really and lifeless. Dont expect more than the absolute basics. Maybe its me- I prefer spaces/buildings that are more creative and/or soulful.

Great spot for a nights accommodation, the room had everything that I needed.

I've stayed in a few cheaper places on this week long trip, and to be honest this place was sadly lacking. Sometimes all it takes to improve a place are the little things, small details that make your stay nicer - and those who do that tend to get good reviews from me, even if there are some issues with the place. But zero thought has been given to the set up and what it would actually be like to stay there. No bedside tables, no bedside lamps or overhead switches so you have to get out of bed to turn off the lights. No power plugs in the bathroom, and not even the slightest bit of personality - no art or colours. A TV with no channels and from what I can tell you couldn't swivel it to face you so it's facing the blank wall. Milk that had been poured into a used jar so you had no idea of the best before date and worst of all, no coffee!! (though when I said something at the cafe in the morning they did give me one for free). Not a lot of road noise but the walls are thin so when the elderly couple were up at 4 in the morning, slamming draws and moving things around, opening the door, stomping around, it kept me awake. From the look of it in the morning, they were attempting to block out the light as I noticed a spare blanked tucked around the bottom of the curtains - there was a big outdoor light right outside of our rooms, that the curtains are not good at blocking. All in all, it was not an enjoyable stay. Pretty disappointed really.
