A Heritage Estate with Modern Comforts

Barmeath Castle’s story begins in 1450, originally as a fortified residence before being transformed into a Georgian home and later reimagined as a castle in 1790. Today, the estate remains under the care of the Bellew family, whose stewardship has elevated its gardens and grounds to extraordinary beauty over the past 25 years.

Inside the Guest Wing, every detail captures this harmony between past and present.

Spacious bedrooms with period furnishings and modern bedding ensure peaceful rest.

A fully equipped kitchen and large dining area make family meals a pleasure.

Elegant living spaces with high ceilings, fireplaces, and soft lighting provide the perfect setting for conversation or a quiet evening.

The bunk room offers an ideal retreat for children, making this property both luxurious and family-friendly.

Gardens, Grounds & Estate Features

The estate extends over 12 acres of formal gardens and 100 acres of private woodland, offering endless opportunities to relax and explore.

The Walled Garden — a beautifully tended space inspired by French garden design, featuring fruit trees, vegetables, and long herbaceous borders bursting with color.

The Wild Garden — a contrast of natural charm, ideal for morning walks or quiet reading surrounded by birdsong.

Outdoor Pool — available during summer months for refreshing swims in the peaceful surroundings of the estate.

Tennis Courts — choose between the grass court or hard court for an afternoon match with family or friends.

Woodland Trails — meander through 100 acres of ancient trees and discover the serenity that has inspired generations.

An Ideal Base for Exploring Ireland’s East Coast

Historic castle. Truly historic. You may even meet Lord and Lady Bellew. The grounds are extensive and beautiful, especially the walled garden, and it is clear that a great deal of work goes into maintaining the property. Our children loved the lake, the ducks, and the beautiful free-roaming dogs and puppy. It was a really memorable setting for our family reunion. The house itself is comfortable, with en suite bedrooms, though guests should expect historic-house charm rather than hotel-style luxury. The bathrooms are functional rather than luxurious, and there were not amenities such as shampoo provided. We also noticed some loud mechanical noises overnight, particularly from the hot water heater room. The only real frustration was that the hot water was accidentally off during our stay. There may have been an expectation that guests would know how to turn it on, but as Americans this was not familiar to us, and unfortunately our message to the host went unanswered, so we ended up with cold showers. Guests should also be prepared for detailed food-waste and recycling rules, with multiple bins to sort food into. That said, Oliver was kind enough to allow 13 of us to stay rather than the stated maximum of 12, which we appreciated. Overall, we highly recommend this incredible property. You really do feel like you are part of history.

We spent several days here with 7 people. Ample room for everyone (plus the ones who couldnt come). Kitchen was great, stocked with loads of pans, plates for more than 20 people, and even had a an americsn refrigerator and dishwasher. Had late nights playing cards and walking the castle grounds.Grounds are amazing and historic. 4-acre walled garden, maze, and extensive paths around the property and farm.BBQ area with large picnic benches in the back. The owners of the manner has very friendly dogs, sheep, horses, ducks, and cattle around the property. Makes a great evening walk about with friends. Some castle interior areas can be toured for 10-euro/pp. Tip: There is a path into town (not the road) through the woods and forest - perfect for a dinner out or a pub visit. There can be traditional music at the pub if people decide to play.
