Frequent and long blackouts, don't stay here

Filtered drinking water was included, and his caretaker would refill it within a few hours of me asking. It was one of the few options around with air-con, though it wasn’t a strong wall unit. It was a weak standalone unit that would only cool within a meter or 2 of it. The kitchen works well. There are enough outlets in the apartment, though two of them are by the window and covered by the bed, and I wouldn’t have noticed them if I wasn’t told about them later on. I was nervous when I saw the mosque next door, but I only heard the call to prayer a handful of times, and never the one in the middle of the night. It's a 30 min walk to Salty's Bar/kitesurfing and the main beach. I'm out of space in the negative section, so: I asked him for a refund for the night I hadn't slept there and had already paid for. I had no guarantee of getting a refund. Booking is surprisingly opaque on the matter, I left 4.5 hours after checkout time, and only one power cut happened during my official booking. The rest of the time, I paid Brian outside of Booking for a slight discount. But the blackouts could've just as easily happened during my (or your) stay though Booking. I think a reasonable person would conclude that I deserved some money back after sweating, without much sleep at all, with no power for 3 nights. I paid for a functioning apartment, and in return for a cumulative 21.5 hours it was little better than camping. When I asked for a refund for the 1 night I hadn’t stayed there, he made a number of excuses, then he changed the subject, and then he attacked my character. Then he made a vague promise that he might give something back at a later time “when he had the money” (I had given him that money just 8 days ago), and then he never gave me a refund. This isn't about me not getting a refund. - Point being: Brian seems nice but he cheated me and he can cheat you too.

The lock is especially hard to get on and off. One owner showed up twice unannounced, which is abnormal and not appreciated. But once I told the other owner, Brian, she stopped. The shower takes forever to drain. There was 1 cockroach 1 night, and 2 the next night. But there weren't any more after I complained and they sprayed. The internet is slow, tested with my laptop it was 9 mpbs dl, 2 ul, ping of 55 ms. And 1 time it cut out, even once the power was back on. I don’t know for sure if it would’ve come back on, because there was the larger and persistent issue of the blackouts/power cuts. Of the 10 nights I was supposed to stay there, there were blackouts on 4 of the days. The first was 4.5 hours, next was 1 hour, the 3rd day was for about 9 hours, and on the fourth day I left when the power had already been off for 7 hours that day. The blackouts aren’t the owners’ fault. But they’ve had enough guests come through here that they could’ve bought a generator, or warned guests. Brian said that "KPLC [Kenya Power] are [sic] indeed our biggest headache.” Yet there’s no mention of this in the property description. I’d had enough of sweating my butt off and lack of sleep because there wasn’t power. I decided to leave early and booked a place in another town. At this point, and only because the caretaker insisted on calling Brian when I gave him the key, Brian offered me another place to stay until power returned. Even if this was a genuine offer (I'll never know), why did it take him 1 week since I told him about the first blackout to try to fix it? Brian later asked me to leave the blackouts out of my review. He tried to bribe me with a free stay next time to keep them out.
