The adaptive reuse of a historic building is very well done. We had drinks, then dinner in the dining room. Later in the evening many local residents came to socialize and enjoy the bar.

It was in the perfect location for the Willa Cather experience. The hotel is a renovated older building and although I didn’t always like their design choices (for example a pukey yellow painted wall in our room) the hotel was comfortable.
The staff was not well trained to be helpful or even hospitable. When we checked in we were handed a sheet of paper that explained how to get into the keyless room; other information was on that sheet and it seemed as if the staff wanted to have as little verbal contact as possible. At breakfast no one greeted us at the door. Two staff members were over in the corner talking and did nothing to explain how things worked. It was just odd. In comparison, at the Hampton ain’t we stayed at the next night, at breakfast, we were greeted, asked if we needed any help, and made to feel welcome. As there wee no ice machines at the Garber, I looked for how to get ice on the sheet of paper given to me the day before, which told me to ask the front desk to get ice for me. When I did, the attendant looked annoyed and told me to raid the ice machine behind the bar in the next room. Parking was behind the building and was a dirt lot and a bit sketchy. The Hotel Garber is in a Red Cloud NE and usually has very few guests, but they still need to make an effort to be welcoming and helpful.
