Disappointing

The location was perfect and the house itself was well appointed and furnished to a reasonable standard.

Unfortunately the house appeared to be ill-prepared for our stay. The beds weren't made up and the linen appeared dirty. The dishwasher had items still inside that were mouldy. We had to find additional linen in the laundry and wash them and all the towels. Considering it is identified to accomodate a large number of guests, it appears that there is insufficient cutlery (especially forks) towels and bed linen. As the house is off the main power grid, you are requested to minimise the use of power as it relies on solar batteries and a back up generator. We lost all power on the Saturday afternoon and called the emergency number in the file. An electrician did arrive fairly promptly and rectified the issue. For the price we paid, I would expect a reliable power supply (even off grid), especially in the winter when it was bitterly cold in a large empty house with 4 adults and two young children under 6. It has a lovely log burner and we practically used all the firewood, so I pity the next occupants, but when the power went out, there weren't even matches to light the fire. Another small point, but an annoying one, was the owners (or the previous guests) had left personal items in draws within the bathrooms. Again I do not expect that in a hotel, costing only a third of the price we paid. The kitchen again was filled with items of food, I understand certain items would be found in the pantry (which needs to be in-date) but not food. Don't get me wrong we still managed to have a great time on the island but I don't believe the French Island House was up to standard, for the price advertised.
