Appalling Hygiene, Zero Accountability — My Worst Accommodation Experience
Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing positive about the condition of this accommodation upon arrival.
This was, without exaggeration, one of the most appalling and unsanitary accommodations I have ever encountered in all my years of travelling.
The apartment looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Mattresses were covered in stains, including what appeared to be blood. There were no bedsheets, and the pillows were filthy, stained and without pillowcases.
Cigarette butts, rubbish, dirt and grime were everywhere. The kitchen had dirty pans with old oil and food residue. There were no towels, linens, toilet paper, paper towels or water. Not even the most basic necessities were provided.
As disturbing as the physical conditions were, the host's response was even more appalling.
Rather than taking responsibility, she offered excuse after excuse, attempting to justify the completely unacceptable conditions.
She actually argued that providing bedsheets and linens was unhygienic. She claimed the lack of water wasn't her responsibility. She blamed previous guests for leaving the apartment filthy, explaining that she had trusted them to clean it and that they had apparently lied to her.
Not once did she demonstrate the level of accountability, professionalism or genuine concern that guests should reasonably expect from someone operating a hospitality business.
I am a host myself, and I understand the responsibilities that come with welcoming paying guests into a property. Regardless of what previous guests may have done, it is the host's responsibility to ensure the accommodation is clean, sanitary, properly equipped and ready for the next arrival.
Guests should never be expected to bear the consequences of a host's failure to inspect and prepare their property.
What made this experience particularly disturbing was not simply the shocking state of the apartment, but the host's persistent attempts to justify it rather than acknowledge the problem.
This property should never have been offered to paying guests in such a condition.
