The host was fantastic. Our booking was last-minute and our plane was delayed, but he waited to greet us and show us everything we needed in the apartment. He also explained about the local shops and restaurants. All of the provisions imaginable were provided, including plenty of towels, dishwasher pods, laundry products, milk and even some beers and wine!
We were there during a heatwave, so the air-conditioning was essential and worked brilliantly. Each bedroom had its own unit , and the main one kept the whole living area mercifully cool.
The surrounding area is quiet and residential, although there is a small supermarket around the corner, and a large one a 7-minute walk away - plenty of choice if wanting to save money and cook in the excellent kitchen.
It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the main beachfront area of Ostia with the restaurants and shops, there's a bus station by the Metro station if you don't fancy longer walks. Download the Freenow app for taxis (Ubers won't come out for local trips).
The local Metro station is about a 5-minute walk away and the frequent trains take about 45 minutes into central Rome with one change. That may sound like a long time, but the trains are cool, comfortable and very cheap (1.50 euros gets 100 minutes of unlimited travel across the network). A place this size in central Rome would cost a fortune, so it's worth the travelling if visitors don't want to be crammed into a hotel room.
