The house is beautiful, very clean and well maintained, and the room was nicely presented. The host was friendly and thoughtful, and I really appreciated the little pancakes and cakes she brought me in the mornings – that was a genuinely lovely gesture. The location is also very pleasant, particularly for Dean Village and the Water of Leith. I also absolutely loved the dog. :)
I think some aspects of the accommodation should be made clearer in the listing. This is quite a busy family household, while at the same time there are many rules and restrictions for guests. Guests only have access to their bedroom and, subject to availability, the shared bathroom. The kitchen and other areas of the house are not accessible, and hot food cannot be eaten in the bedroom, meaning it has to be eaten outside in the garden. This can be quite restrictive given Edinburgh weather. The only bathroom is shared with other guests as well as members of the household, so despite the listing and the host suggesting that there are normally no issues with availability, I found it occupied several times when I wanted to use it. Guests receive their own towel but cannot leave it in the bathroom (no such space) or use the bathroom towels, which makes even washing your hands a little inconvenient. I also found the bedroom quite cold. I tried adjusting the radiator but could not get it to heat up, while guests are asked to leave one of the windows slightly open for ventilation. The bathroom, by contrast, had noticeable underfloor heating. Guests are understandably asked to be quiet, but this felt somewhat one-sided at times. There was a fairly long conversation directly outside my bedroom one evening, and there was also normal family noise such as talking, singing and whistling. None of this is unreasonable in a homestay, but I think describing the property as a busy family household would allow guests looking for a particularly quiet stay to make a more informed choice. Finally, the room is fairly small with limited storage, and some of the storage within the room is marked private. Overall, my main issue was not the homestay environment itself, but that the combination of a busy household, limited access to shared facilities and the number of restrictions placed on guests was not quite what I had expected from the listing.

Perfect stay for a solo female traveller. Jessica was incredibly welcoming and thoughtful, from the fresh homemade cake to the flask of cold water waiting for me after a concert. She's quite particular about her house rules, but it actually adds to the feeling of comfort and security. Everything is well looked after, and I felt completely safe and at home during my stay. It genuinely felt like staying with a cool auntie rather than in a guest room. Would definitely stay again next time I'm in Edinburgh.
It was a fair distance from the city centre on foot, but it was ideal for attending concerts at Murrayfield.
