We absolutely loved our week at John’s Cottage in Ukanc, at the quiet end of Lake Bohinj.
The house is a compact shepherd’s hut and brilliantly set up. Downstairs there’s a pretty sitting room, a kitchen with everything you could need, and a lovely shower room. Upstairs are two bedrooms – one looking out to the mountains behind, the other with a loggia facing the trees that stand between the house and the lake.
It’s 200m from the beach at Ukanc, which to our mind is the nicest on the lake. Konstanza has the place equipped for a proper lake holiday: two mountain bikes, a paddleboard & a canoe.
They were excellent hosts. The house was immaculate when we arrived, they made us feel genuinely welcome, & we felt privileged to be sharing what is clearly their family holiday home, with full run of everything.
Eating is easy. The restaurant in Ukanc is a ten-minute walk, with a lovely outdoor terrace, open 3pm to 9pm while we were there. A little further on, the campsite restaurant does breakfast through to dinner. It’s 5 km round to the village at the other end of the lake – a good walk, cycle, run or drive – if you want more choice & a supermarket.

The setting is absolutely wonderful, very close to the lake, with amazing views of the mountains. The interior is very cozy, comfortable, and clean.
The hosts made sure we had everything we could possibly need - including two bikes, a SUP, and a canoe.
