Good Value for Money, but the Kitchen and Cleaning Need Improvement
The property was overall okay, and if you are mainly looking for somewhere to sleep, I think it offers very good value for money. The bed was comfortable, the bedding looked new and clean, and the towels were also fresh and clean.
The dining area was fine, and the shower was very good, with excellent water pressure and a good water temperature. The toilet flushed properly as well.
There was also an ironing board and iron available. The iron looked new, and the ironing board was clean and tidy. The laminate-style flooring downstairs was a real positive too, as it looked clean and was easy to keep tidy.
Overall, the main facilities were comfortable, and adequate for a short stay.
The main reason I booked a self-catering property was because I was travelling with five children and wanted to be able to prepare simple meals rather than spending a lot of money on takeaways. Unfortunately, the kitchen was the biggest disappointment.
The oven was extremely dirty, probably the dirtiest oven I have ever come across in a holiday property. The trays had burnt-on food and grease, and I did not feel comfortable using them. I had brought frozen fish, waffles and pizza for the children, expecting to simply put them in the oven after a long day at Alton Towers, but I was unable to do that.
The cooking pots themselves were new and usable, but there was no frying pan, so I had to cook everything in saucepans instead. The cooking utensils were very cheap plastic and started to soften or melt when exposed to heat. I think stainless-steel utensils would be much more practical and durable. There was also no colander or large sieve.
The kitchen was also very minimally equipped, with only around four large plates, four small plates, four cups, four glasses, cutlery, three pots, one saucepan, a kettle and toaster. Washing-up liquid and a soft sponge were provided, but there was no proper scourer that could have helped with cleaning the oven trays.
Because the oven could not be used, what should have been a quick and easy evening meal became very tiring. After a full day out with the children, I ended up standing at the hob cooking frozen fish and waffles in several pots. This made the evening much more difficult than it needed to be.
The general cleaning standard could also be improved. The house was quite dusty, particularly around the radiators and skirting boards, and there were hairs in the bathroom. There was also no bin in the bathroom. The fridge had a noticeable leftover-food smell, and there were bottles of soft drink left inside from a previous guest, which ideally should have been removed during cleaning.
The arrival experience was also unsettling.
