Villa Mumu Layan, Phuket

Villa Mumu takes its name from my late mother's nickname
a private tribute that shapes everything about how this house feels to live in. It was never built to be simply another luxury rental. Every room holds an original piece from a personally curated art collection spanning European and Southeast Asian traditions, assembled over years by an international art advisor, so that a stay here is closer to living inside a private collection than checking into a villa.

The house itself is built for six ensuite bedrooms sleeping up to twelve guests — five principal suites, each with its own distinct materials and character, plus a sixth flexible room set up as a private cinema and games den, easily converted into an additional bedroom for children or teenagers. The master suite alone is worth the trip: a black marble bathroom, a freestanding soaking tub set against a living plant wall, and a dressing room lined entirely in rattan. Two kitchens — one at the heart of the open-plan living space, a second at the outdoor BBQ and bar pavilion — let a private chef work the grill while the main kitchen stays free, or let a family split cooking duties without ever feeling crowded.

Outside, a private 12-by-6-metre pool with a sunk-in lounge and a submerged sunbed sits beside a separate jacuzzi, framed by a tropical garden of mature palms, natural boulders and quiet ponds — fully enclosed, so children can explore freely within the gate. A small private gym, a covered sala for shaded lounging, and daily housekeeping round out a stay where nothing is left to arrange yourself.

Villa Mumu sits on Soi Layan 3, on Phuket's quieter west coast — currently the only house on the street, tucked into the surrounding jungle with no neighbours in sight. Three beaches are minutes away: Sirinat National Park Beach at the doorstep, Layan Beach a five-minute drive, and Banana Beach — small, sheltered, and often nearly empty — at four. A working farm café sits a three-minute walk from the gate, a favourite outing for younger guests.
