Eco-Domaine La Fontaine - HOTEL-SPA - 300 m Plage de la Fontaine aux Bretons

The room was very good indeed, modern, quiet and well-appointed, with a comfortable bed, an excellent bathroom and an agreeable outlook. The seaside location was excellent. The focus on sustainability was a plus. The gardens were well laid out, and a pleasure to wander round. Drinking water was available at all times. The restaurant was good, with a special word for the breakfast. All the staff we met, from reception to restaurant, were cheerful and helpful.

The WiFi was not very strong. We resorted to 4/5G for our communications. Apart from that, no criticisms at all.

La Fontaine is a spa hotel however as a hotel guest you have to pay extra to use the spa for anything (not just treatments), which we found a bit disappointing, particularly as the outdoor pool wasn’t open. We rented some bikes from the hotel but neither of the batteries on the electric bikes were fully charged and one of the pannier racks on the back of one of the ordinary bikes almost came off half way round our cycle as did the chain guard as the bolts holding them on didn’t have nuts attached - just generally not very well maintained. The dinner served in the restaurant was a fixed one - ie no choice for any course and yet the service was incredibly slow. It took about an hour before our starters came? The food itself was excellent but it took a very long time. Lastly the hotel had booked a convention of motor home enthusiasts which took over the whole car park on the second day we were there. We were asked to move our cars into a different bit of the car park which we found a bit odd but we did as asked. Then coming back from dinner in Pornic that evening, until the night porter came and sorted it out, we were barred from coming into the hotel car park altogether by some officious motor homer! It left a nasty taste in the mouth, which was a shame.

No choice of menu the first night. The main dish was very good but with no choice of starter or dessert we chose to do without. Would have liked a fish dish. We normally only have coffee in the morning so did not take the breakfast.

A lovely looking hotel, isolated in a peaceful location. The room was basic but comfortable and warm.

The only thing that let my experience down was the ‘restaurant’. The evening meal was limited to just one dish, in my case so-called pulled pork (somewhat flavourless and served lukewarm) with just a few potatoes and only one salad (lettuce) choice. Yes, I know the hotel makes a big thing about only serving vegetables that it grows on site but, come on, they should be able to do better than this. The experience just felt too much like a lower class carvery in the UK. Such a shame.
