Our stay at the Barley Store Room had a few positives, but unfortunately several issues meant it wasn’t the experience we had hoped for.
The room itself was smaller than we expected from the listing. The photos appear to show a sofa, but our room did not have one. With two suitcases there wasn’t really anywhere to put them other than the floor, despite there being a wardrobe. The bathroom would also benefit from a shelf or two for toiletries.
There was noticeable noise from footsteps above, which suggests there are rooms overhead.
When we first arrived, the bathroom lights weren’t working. There isn’t a light switch in the bathroom, so we initially assumed they were meant to come on automatically and ended up leaving the bathroom door open to use the bedroom light. They did come on after a while and they are meant to turn off automatically, but stayed on all night.
The local Fox covert pub serves great meals, well worth a visit.
The biggest issue was the shower. Looked like it needed a good scrub. When we turned it on, the shower head immediately flipped upwards because of the water pressure and sprayed over the top of the shower screen, soaking our toiletries, clothes and my hair straighteners that were beside the bathroom door. Water was also escaping from the bottom of the shower. Fortunately, the shower head simply needed tightening with a screwdriver, but it would be worth checking this between guests.
After messaging the WhatsApp contact, someone came to the room to help. While the shower was fixed quickly, I was disappointed by the comment, “So let me get this right, you don’t just have one problem, you have five.” After almost 36 hours of travelling from New Zealand, we were simply hoping to have a shower and get some sleep, so this response made us feel as though we were being difficult rather than reporting genuine maintenance issues.
Another small point was that the kettle couldn’t fit under the sink tap, making it awkward to fill.
