Black Forest Hostel is a wonderfully rustic, back to basics hostel.
The hostel is 10 minutes walk from Freiburg town centre. It has a large common area and a large kitchen. The dorm rooms are large and beds unallocated. Rooms at the back of the hostel overlook a vineyard and the scenic viewpoint of Freiburg.
Showers were great with a cool design.
The hostel has a really relaxed and welcoming feel, spoiled only by the plethora of young North American men who insist on hanging around the entrance smoking ‘the weed’ and strumming guitars very badly.

The staff was super kind and helpful. Best customer service I've ever experienced! Having access to the common areas before check in and after check out was amazing. Also for storing your luggage.
Such a great vibe in the hostel, I had the best time ❤️

Rooms were comfortable and spacious, I really loved the town, everyone was so friendly including everyone in the hostel, staff were lovely and very informative. Rooms didn't lock but I would say I still felt very safe and the front door was locked at night.
Only negative for me was that there was no available laundry facilities to wash personal clothes, perfectly aware that it wasn't in the description though but I underestimated how many clothes I would need and really would have liked to wash my clothes at some point throughout my stay.

With this being written, I do wanna mention that I travel constantly and sleep exclusively in hostels
- No pictures of the room should give you an idea, the rooms were so cramped that I could smell the breath of the person in the bed next to me.
- Shower area not too big, also have to press the water button in shower every 15 - 20 seconds (I counted).. I’m all up for saving water but this was a bit excessive.
- 10 euro deposit for key and having to fill out the info manually upon arriving is something that I remember hostels doing a few years ago, but I thought no one did anymore. Everything except the passport number is already provided when booking online. Other hostels just take a picture of your ID.
- Some facility items are definitely worth upgrading / updating!
- Their washing machine was broke (not their fault) and wasn’t gonna be fixed in less than a week, the only laundromat worth going to was a roughly 20min walk away.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t stay here again, but it makes all the difference to know what I’m getting into.
This place shows a lot of promise!
It just needs more love and less people cramping.
