Ajax was established in 1941 as a munitions production center, where 40 million shells were packed to support the war effort by an imported workforce of 9,000. Ajax has grown exponentially since then and is now a town of 110,000 that’s part of the greater Toronto Metropolitan Area, boasting over 100 restaurants. Ajax is rich with parks and occupies a narrow stretch of waterfront at Lake Ontario. Some visit for the proximity to ski resorts in the Durham Regional Forest north of town, including Skyloft, Dagmar, and Lakeridge Ski Resorts. Others are drawn to town as Ajax develops its reputation as the convention capital of the Durham region.
