The popular beach town of Byron Bay is two hours south of Brisbane on the New South Wales coast. The Byron Bay Airport in Ballina is only 30 minutes away, but Gold Coast Airport is also under an hour north along the Pacific Highway — and often a cheaper flight. In recent years, the laid-back lifestyle has slowly been replaced by luxury resorts, fine dining, and chic boutiques. Shops selling crystals, tarot readings, and alternative healing modalities remain a throwback to Byron Bay’s early free-spirited roots. The town is known for as much vibrancy by night as by day, with many bars and live music. Cape Byron is the easternmost point on the Australian continent, making for fantastic beachside sunrises and sunsets.

A Quick Guide to Byron Bay in New South Wales

  • Cape Byron Lighthouse & Lighthouse Trail: The Cape Byron Lighthouse dates back to 1901 and is Australia’s most eastern lighthouse. Take a tour, climb to the top to watch the dolphins, visit the maritime museum, or enjoy the view from the cafe. The walk from town is pleasant and the cape provides many walking routes, but driving is also an option. The cape includes four beaches good for surfing, swimming, and whale watching.
  • Main Beach: Right in the middle of town, Main Beach attracts everyone from surfers, swimmers, and sun- loungers to buskers and fire dancers. Stay nearby to avoid traffic and remain within walking distance to nearly everything.
  • Tallow Beach: A three and a half-mile expanse of uncrowded beach stretching down from Cape Byron, Tallow Beach is separated from the town by Arakwal National Park. The beach is better for swimming and walking than surfing. It becomes Broken Head Beach at its southern end with the Suffolk Park neighborhood behind it.

  • Northern Rivers Region: An hour inland of Byron Bay — which is also part of the Northern Rivers Region — is a collection of small towns and villages set in an expanse of land, densely crisscrossed by small and large rivers. Popular stops include the regional capital of Lismore as well as Bangalow, Nimbin, and The Channon. Activities might include nature walks, the Channon Craft Market, or golfing and bowling in Lismore.
  • Mount Warning: Just over an hour northwest of Byron Bay is the world’s oldest extinct volcano known as Mount Warning, set inside Wollumbin National Park.   • Belongil Beach: At Belongil Beach, you’ll find accommodations away from bars and restaurants that are still accessible when desired. The beach is generally calm and includes a nude section.
  • Cape Byron: Cape Byron has a variety of smaller hotels and guesthouses, but limited dining options. However, it offers some of the best scenic views and is closest to Wategos Beach, Clarke’s Beach, and the northern end of Tallow Beach. The area is walkable via walking trails and Lighthouse Road.
